The idea of freezing ejaculate originated in Montaguez from Italy in the 18th century, who conducted successful experiments with animal sperm, freezing to –15 ° C. He also proposed to create a cryobank of sperm of soldiers who participated in dangerous battles. But at that time society was not ready for such innovative projects!
In 1954, the first baby was born after using cryopreserved sperm, and the first sperm banks were created in 1965 in the US and Japan.
At present, the only certified sperm bank in Ukraine operates in the city Kharkiv. Based on anthropometric and phenotypic data our clinic selects donors and receives sperm for infertility treatment programs only from that bank.
If necessary, cryopreservation of fresh semen can be performed (for example, obtained after puncture from testicular tissue (TESA) or in case of cancer before undergoing chemotherapy or before performing life-threatening work). It will be frozen in liquid nitrogen and can be stored for up to 10 years. Although, in 2002 a healthy baby was born after using semen that had been frozen for 21 years!
