Перша вагітність з використанням кріоконсервованих ембріонів була одержана в 1980 році.
Якщо під час програми лікування безпліддя методом запліднення ін вітро (так зване “штучне запліднення”) після ЕКЗ залишаються повноцінні ембріони, клініка рекомендує пацієнтам заморозити їх.
Кріоконсервація рекомендована на той випадок, коли пара захоче народити ще одну дитину або на випадок, якщо теперішнє ЕКЗ буде невдалим.
Ембріони заморожуються методом вітрифікації та зберігаються в рідкому азоті при температурі –196 °С.
Коефіцієнт ефективності настання вагітності після розмороження складає близько 70-80%.
Зберігати ембріони рекомендується до 5 років.
